Here’s a very nice project which shows just well fibre optics work in distributing lighting. Hundreds of individual light points are dotted around this fine model by enthusiast Bill Campbell. In all, there is getting on for 1500 metres of 0.75mm fibre in the display.

Bill had already bought 500 metres of fibre when he purchased the specialist modelling LED units which generate the coloured light, and then discovered that he could buy his optical fibre far more cheaply from Starscape (!).

There are two of the German-made LED units, one of which offers flashing and chasing effects.

From the two LED units hundreds of individual fibres run across the underside of the model distributing the different coloured light to the appropriate place on the surface.

The model is at 1/500 scale and measures 8 ft by 4 ft (2.44 x 1.22 m).

It will be the centrepiece of a toy and model exhibition being staged at the McKechnie Institute in Girvan,

Ayrshire from 1st July to the end of September (2010).
