When Port Talbot-based firm Blackbox-AV Ltd was commissioned to create an interactive display panel for the new Lizard Lighthouse Heritage Centre on the Cornish coast, the company approached Starscape to discuss using fibre optics in the project. The result is the panel below in which hundreds of individual fibre end points create the glowing dots to indicate Trinity House’s various types of navigational aids which are provided to shipping around Britain’s coasts.

In practice, only one of the colour circuits would be illuminated at one time, but this photo shows four separate circuits, each with its different colour code (courtesy of the colour wheels in the light sources). 0.75mm fibres were used in conjuction with 100 watt halogen light sources.

This interactive display uses fibre optics to represent Trinity House’s various navigational aids.
